x402 didn't start on Solana. It started as a Coinbase-incubated idea — a genuinely simple fix for a 25-year-old gap in the HTTP spec, using the long-dormant 402 status code to let any API or service request payment before serving a response. Base was the natural first home for it, and Base still carries some of the deepest transaction history the protocol has.

But protocols aren't loyal to the chain that ships them first. They go where the economics work — and increasingly, the economics of pay-per-request, agent-to-agent commerce are pointing at Solana.

Base built the on-ramp

Credit where it's due: Base's early traction proved the model. Experiments like PING showed the network could absorb high-concurrency, high-frequency micropayment load without falling over, and Coinbase's backing gave x402 the institutional legitimacy a brand-new payment standard needs to be taken seriously. A lot of the tooling, mental models, and merchant interest that exist across the whole x402 ecosystem today trace back to that early Base activity — including work PayAI did helping merchants and agents on Base scale their own x402 volume.

That history matters. It's also, increasingly, history.

A few things have changed the shape of this race in 2026:

  • The standard went cross-chain, officially. When the x402 Foundation launched under the Linux Foundation with Coinbase and Cloudflare as founding stewards, the Solana Foundation joined as a premier member alongside Visa and Stripe — the same tier as the chain that originated the protocol. That's not a fringe integration; that's Solana being treated as core infrastructure for where x402 goes next.
  • Real merchant rails are testing it. KSNET, a Korean payment processor handling more than $4B in monthly volume across 330,000+ merchant locations, signed on with the Solana Foundation this summer to bring Solana Pay — and to pilot x402 for agent-driven commerce — into that network. That's the kind of distribution that turns a protocol from "developer curiosity" into "something a checkout counter touches."
  • The infrastructure keeps getting faster underneath it. Solana cut its slot time again in August, down to 350ms, with the bigger shift — Alpenglow, targeting roughly 150ms finality versus today's ~12.8 seconds — queued for activation this fall. For an agent that might make dozens of pay-per-call decisions inside a single task, that kind of latency isn't a nice-to-have, it's the difference between a workflow that feels instant and one that feels like waiting on a card swipe.
  • The volume swings have been real, even if noisy. Public trackers have shown weeks this year where Solana carried the clear majority of all x402 transaction volume across supported chains — at times north of 80%. It hasn't been a straight line, and cumulative totals still tell a more competitive story. But the direction of travel, week over week, has been hard to miss.

None of this makes Solana's numbers uncontested — x402 tracking is still messy, methodologies disagree, and weekly activity has been volatile across every chain, not just Solana's. Anyone citing a specific market-share number right now should date it. But the trend underneath the noise is consistent: more of the agent-native volume — the low-cost, high-frequency, machine-initiated kind x402 was actually built for — is settling on Solana.

This isn't a knockout — it's the standard getting bigger

It's tempting to frame this as a race with a winner and a loser. We don't think that's the useful way to look at it. x402 is a protocol, not a product tied to one chain — the whole point is that it's chain-agnostic at the spec level. Every network that adopts it seriously, whether that's Base, Solana, Polygon, or the growing list of others, adds legitimacy to the standard itself and makes it a safer bet for the next merchant or agent framework deciding whether to build on it at all. A rising x402 lifts every facilitator, every SDK, every chain that's committed to making agent-native payments work.

So this isn't "Solana beats Base." It's closer to: the parts of the agent economy that need speed, cost-efficiency, and finality that doesn't get in the way are finding their way to the rails built for that — and right now, that's increasingly Solana.
